Annual Camp Volleyball Tournament - September 11th

September 11th is our Annual Sand Volleyball Tournament to benefit Camp Ne-O-Tez! The games start at 2:00 pm. The concession stand opens at noon with burgers, brats, hot dogs, fries, nachos, funnel cakes, sno cones and much more. Come and root on the teens from your congregation. If you don't have a team to cheer for just come and have lunch or dinner and enjoy the fellowship. Thanks to the Maryland Heights congregation for donating all the items for the concession stand.

This Sunday, May 15th is our Annual Clean Up Day at Camp Ne-O-Tez. We have lots of clean up to do to get camp ready to start in three weeks. All the facilities will be cleaned and there is lots of mulch to spread around Camp property. We begin with worship at 9:00 am at camp - Nate Reiser will be our speaker. Then it is all hands busy! Congratulations to Roger Gleber who was named the 2011 Friend of Camp at the Annual Dinner last Friday night. Roger has been marvelous to use his talents as an electrician for camp. Maryland Heights Men's Retreat

A group of guys braved the cold and headed to camp for their men's retreat. It was cold and they had to hit the road earlier than planned on Saturday due to the snow but they had a great time! The guys ranged in age from 20 -73! Camp is a great place for all kinds of gatherings!

The Stone Castle "kitchen" area is getting a new look. The old cabinets, counter and sink were torn out and have been replaced with an upgraded counter and sink. This will give our staff that stays in the castle and retreat groups a much more usable area.

Nate, Christea, Nick and Amy have spent their winter break working on renovations in the Stone Castle. The bathroom has been gutted and has new fixtures, ceramic tile floor, more storage and a fresh new look! Thanks to the Reiser family for their dedication to Ne-O-Tez! The shelves are where the door to the outside used to be. Never used the door.

Ever wonder what goes on at Camp Ne-o-tez after all the youth groups have left for the summer? Well, Nate's been hard at work making improvments and cleaning up after Mother Nature. An oak tree fell across Crystal Falls in August and took out 2 cedar trees in the process. It was a huge mess, but boy did it smell good! Question: If a tree falls at Ne-o-tez and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? He's also been repainting all the cabins and bunks. Everything will have a fresh new look for next summer. Keep checking the blog all winter for updates from the source. We'll post fall leaf photos and winter snow pics! Enjoy camp all year long!

The annual dinner was held last Friday evening. We were blessed with donations of $42,131. Thank-you to our faithful supporters. That night we heard four individuals share their feelings about Camp Ne-O-Tez. Read below the stirring comments from Amy.

Thoughts On Ne-O-Tez

Camp is more than singing about frogs that go flo-do-di-o-di-o, three bluepigeons and sippin' cider... more than bug bites, poison ivy, sweat, rain and mud... more than knowing where to be when the whistle blows next... more than running to get in the front of the lunch line... more than hikes to inspiration point and campfires in the dark... more than mail call and standing in the slop bucket... more than catching crawdads in crystal falls.

Camp has been, and continues to be one of the few constants in my life. From the very first year that I was old enough to pack up and go off to camp, I knew that I had found something special. I couldn't necessarily define that'something', but it was what kept me coming back week after week... and year after year. As I grew I found friendships there... people to love, laugh with, and lean on when times were tough. For a week at a time I inherited a whole troupe of sisters to play with, work with and fight with. We fell in and out of love with the dishwashers, learned and studied in Bible class,and played hard in the Ball Field. I had some phenomenal counselors who were godly, nurturing young women leading by example and showing me the type of person I wanted to be. I adored them, admired them, and tried to emulate them. These relationships continued on long after the camp session ended.The friendships made there were so strong, and so fast... I continue to be amazed at how such strong bonds can be forged in the span of 6 days... on the first day, everyone's new and shy, and by Friday night each cabin acts as a cohesive unit.

As I transitioned from camper to counselor, I fell even more in love with camp. I loved my girls, and wanted them to love camp just as much as I did.There were some summers I would come home Saturday, exhausted from a week at camp, throw the contents of my suitcase into the washing machine and go to bed... only to pack it all back into the suitcase from the dryer the next morning to go back down for another week. Whether it was being acamper, a dishwasher, or a counselor, I just couldn't get enough. Looking back, I am so thankful for the influence of camp as I tackled the painstaking process of defining to myself who I am. Having been a teenager once, I admit that I never want to be one again... Trying to figure out who I was and where I fit in this world was overwhelming... and all of my questions seemed to lead to more questions. I have to admit that there were times at camp where I was broken... But looking back, I am just floored at the way God used camp to forge and shape my heart.

The memories I treasure most from that time, are from getting to know and love my creator. Camp has always been one of those places where I can feel God and His love more easily. I was baptized by my father in Crystal Falls, and I remember the joyof that day... I felt like I was glowing I was filled with so much Light.

Over the years, a few things have changed at camp... there may be some new paint, a new structure or bridge... but camp itself... the spirit and essence of Ne-O-Tez is unchanged. Now I am one of the parents that drops her children off on Sunday afternoon, makes sure they get one of the "good" bunks and kisses them goodbye. I write letters throughout the week, and can't wait to hear all of the camp stories they come home with. They talkabout nothing else after they get home, and sing songs in the car. It seems like every year there are a few new campfire songs... but the oldies and goodies are still around. I have learned to be careful when unpacking the contents of their suitcases... every now and then an errant stink bug or spider makes the trip home with them... But each year, when I pick them up on Saturday, under the dirt and grime, I see the light in their eyes that I recognize... the light of children who are learning to love and adore their Father in His place... and I rejoice.

Last summer I had the joy of watching my oldest daughter commit her life toChrist, being baptized by her father in the same waters where I so many years ago was baptized by mine. Her face was radiant, and I know that she is writing her own life story, and that Camp is a very special and important part of that story.

And as for myself, I still can't give up camp entirely. I have found a home in the nurse's role, and get my yearly 'camp fix' while kissing skinned knees and treating bug bites. I sit and quietly watch camp life going on as it has before and as it will continue to do after my own kids are grown and gone. The clothing styles and haircuts are different from my own lineup of camp pictures, but the discoveries and emotions are the same. God continues His presence at camp... and I am excited and honored to be a part of His work there.

Camp Ne-O-Tez Land Acquisition

In 2003, we purchased 10 acres of land behind the Pine Lodge and the Stone Castle, but we have been hoping to acquire more acreage behind Cabins 1 and 3, all the way to Inspiration Point. This would provide a much-needed protective buffer from potential commercial development in this area of Jefferson County.

Last fall, Camp was offered the opportunity to acquire additional land along our eastern property line. On February 19th, we closed on the purchase of 27 acres of land. This property was acquired at a very attractive price, and the funds were provided predominantly by incremental donations, allowing us to forego taking on any debt or using general fund money. What a blessing from the Lord!

While most of our supporters and summer campers and staff have not been aware of the previous property boundaries, we see this land as one more important investment in Camp’s future. May God continue to provide for Ne-O-Tez in incredible ways, as we train our youth to walk with Christ.

After 20 years of service as camp caretakers we would like to honor them at a reception on Sunday, January 17th at the Maryland Heights Church of Christ. The reception will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Bill and Sherri are moving due to health and related issues. We would like to send them off with our love and good wishes. For those who wish to contribute to a thank-you gift we will be putting together a "money tree" that day. There will be a presentation to the Moody's at 3:30 pm. Sunday, May 17th saw 60 people at Camp Ne-O-Tez! We started our morning with a time of worship and then got to work cleaning everything from cabins, creek, bathhouses, pine lodge, castle and more! We are just about ready for camp . . .

The Long and Winding Road . . . .

Thanks to Chuck Pudiwitr and his company Apex Construction for seeing the need to fix the camp entrance road and coordinating this project. We had experienced severe washout and the right side of the road was badly broken. They replaced a 12" drain pipe with a 30" pipe to help with water runoff and then repaired the road. Thanks - it is volunteers like this that make it possible for Camp Ne-O-Tez to continue their mission of "Training Youth to Walk with Christ"! The guy with the shovel is Chuck's son Jared.

We had a great turnout for staff training. Over 75 kids came for the afternoon together. We shared lunch, attended classes, voted for the 2009 t-shirt and role played. Thanks to everyone who attended. A special thanks to Dave for organizing.

Last week was a busy one at camp! They tested the sewer system and it works! We are waiting for the final DNR inspection and we are ready to go. We got new steps at the staff cabin and spring flowers are everywhere.

This is the big weekend - - - for the new sewer system! The electric is finished (thanks Jon, Daryl and Roger) and we are ready for the cutover this weekend! We hope it all flows! Thanks for your support of this project!

UPDATE from Jon Shadduck our project engineer!

ELECTRICAL - All electrical is complete. I have a few clean up electrical items that should take about 15 minutes before we startup. A great big THANK YOU to Darryl Simmons, Roger Gleber, Jeff Kenee, and Darryl’s co-worker (I can’t remember his name). These folks saved a TON of money for camp! Based on our proposals, I would estimate that they saved camp about $4-6000. THANKS!!
OLD SYSTEM - Loana, our contractor, has cut over the sewer drains into our new system, covered everything up, and laid down seed and straw. Our old system is GONE! We can’t use the facilities until we get DNR certification.
STARTUP – The equipment vendor, Flo-systems, will come out and set up all their equipment and give Bill and I a hands-on training lesson for the system.

INSPECTION - Once startup is complete, we will schedule the DNR and our engineer to come out for final inspection. I have been in contact with our engineers and the DNR. We hope to have all certifications done by May 1 in time for the retreat May 2-3, and it looks good at this time. I will keep everyone posted.

Middle School Clean-Up Retreat

Last weekend middle school/jr high kids from the area came to camp. They spent some time hanging out, cleaning up camp, studying God's word and getting ready to get to camp this summer!

Thanks to all of you who attended our Annual Dinner last night, March 27th. Mike Runcie did a wonderful job speaking/singing the message of camp. You all were marvelous raising over $43,000 for Ne-O-Tez. Dave Berry was honored as the "Friend of Camp" for 2009!

Working on the Roofs!

Taking advantage of warm December days our roofers are busy getting the new roof on Cabin 6 - they have Cabin 5 stripped and ready to go next. Hopefully, by next week we will have all 6 cabins and the staff cabin reroofed! Here are a couple of pictures of the work in progress.
